Barry Gordon, originally from the New York/New Jersey Tri-State area, now resides in Oregon, where he serves as Non-Tenure Track Faculty in the University of Oregon’s College of Design’s School of Architecture and Environment and as Assistant Director of the Urban Design Lab. Since joining The Urban Collaborative in 2008, Barry has played a pivotal role as Chief Operating Officer, Senior Planner, and Project Manager. He also serves as Advisory Council Chair and Lead Instructor for the Federal Master Planning Institute.
Barry earned his bachelor’s degree in Community Development and Applied Economics from the University of Vermont and went on to complete concurrent master’s degrees in Landscape Architecture and Community and Regional Planning at the University of Oregon. A leading expert in sustainable design and development, policy development, education and training, urban design, and landscape preservation planning, Barry has been assisting federal agencies since 2003 in developing sustainable planning policies, training, implementation, and visualization strategies. His collaborative planning processes and designs set a high standard for military, municipal, and private development planning.
Certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners since 2012 and holding a LEED Green Associate credential since 2013, Barry has contributed significantly to over 150 area development plans, 130 architectural designs, 35 full master plans, 45 technical plans, 75 DD1391 Programming Documents, and numerous planning feasibility studies, transportation studies, and aviation studies for Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Joint Base installations.
Barry has been instrumental in developing the curriculum for the nine Master Planning courses offered in the PROSPECT program and is a supporting instructor for these courses, which cover sustainable planning, design, construction, and program management. He also served as a lead instructor for OSD Master Planning Training and led the worldwide assessment and Master Plan Training for the U.S. Marine Corps.
A dedicated supporter of the American Planning Association’s Federal Planning Division, Barry has actively contributed to the APA-FPD Awards and Events Committees over the years, further emphasizing his commitment to advancing the field of planning.
