Barry Gordon
Chief Operating Officer, Senior Planner
Mr. Gordon is originally from the New York, New Jersey Tri-State area but is currently residing in Oregon, where he is a Non-Tenure Track Faculty Member of the Architecture Department at the University of Oregon and the Assistant Director of the Urban Design Lab, as well as the chief operating officer and senior planner of The Urban Collaborative, LLC.
Mr. Gordon received his undergraduate education at the University of Vermont, where he earned his bachelor’s in community development and applied economics. Following that, he attended the University of Oregon to earn concurrent master’s degrees in both Landscape Architecture and Community and Regional Planning. Since 2003, Barry has become a leading expert in sustainable design and development, education and training, policy development, urban design and landscape preservation planning for the Department of Defense, and private and public-sector clients. He assists federal agencies with the development of sustainable planning policies, implementation, training, and visualization strategies. Barry is a leading member of a team whose designs and collaborative planning processes are setting a new standard for military, municipal, and private development planning. Mr. Gordon holds a certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (2012), and LEED Green Associate credential (2013).
Mr. Gordon helped develop the curriculum and is a supporting instructor for the nine Master Planning courses offered in the PROSPECT program on sustainable planning, design, construction, and program management. He was a lead instructor for OSD Master Planning Training and program lead for the worldwide assessment and Master Plan Training for the US Marine Corps. Barry has served as the primary and contributing agent to over 100 area development plans, 30 sustainability and energy master plans, 27 architectural designs, 26 full master plans, 29 technical plans, 70 form-based codes, numerous planning feasibility studies, and transportation and aviation studies on Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Joint Base installations.
Mr. Gordon is a dedicated supporter of the APA’s Federal Planning Division, and volunteers his time supporting the APA-FPD Awards and Events Committees.
