Adnya Sarasmita, PhD, AICP

Planner + Architectural Designer

Dr. Sarasmita brings a wealth of expertise in research, planning, and design, leveraging her technical and writing skills across diverse planning and design projects for municipalities and federal agencies. Since joining The Urban Collaborative in 2019, she has applied her extensive experience to a variety of impactful initiatives. From 2015 to 2021, she served as an Affiliate Instructor and Teaching Associate at the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments, where she taught and co-developed courses in urban planning and architecture. Her teaching portfolio ranges from small graduate-level studios to large undergraduate lectures with over 160 participants.

Currently, Dr. Sarasmita leads the Federal Master Planning Institute (FMPI) as Director and Instructor, delivering training and continuing education for planners and federal agency employees. She also serves as Conference Coordinator for the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE), further enhancing her contributions to the field.

Dr. Sarasmita earned her PhD in Built Environment from the University of Washington, where her doctoral research focused on the spatial and social dimensions of urban informality and their role in shaping urban spaces, with an emphasis on the integration of human and environmental aspects in space production. She also holds a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Iowa as a Fulbright Scholar and a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Universitas Brawijaya in Indonesia. Her interdisciplinary background and dedication to sustainable and inclusive urban planning make her a vital member of The Urban Collaborative.
